A two-year postdoc position is open in a theoretical group at the Bio-Complexity section at the Niels Bohr Institute starting 1st October 2023 or close to that date. The research activity will focus on models of condensates formation and oscillations in cells.
Our group and research
You will be part of a group where we aim for an interdisciplinary mix of skills and backgrounds centered around dynamical systems and complex physics. We focus on understanding the responses when cells are either damaged or stressed using physical and mathematical modelling. We investigate oscillations in transcription factors NF-kB and p53 and the understanding of coupled oscillations of these proteins with oscillating external signals. We aim at studying how these oscillations are related to condensate formation around spatial locations in the cells, most notably around DNA damage sites.
Project description
The positons deals with a problem at the interface of physics and biology: “How can cells operate in space and time to achieve a fine-tuned regulation of specific targets? And can dynamic variations in the concentration of transcription factors, combined with local condensation hotspots, advance the level of control in response to external stresses?” The cell can use phase transitions to produce droplets at distinct locations in space in order to enhance specific processes, and stimulate downstream targets allowing the cell a new degree of temporal control. Some transcription factors are known to show distinct dynamic responses to external stresses but how this translates into regulation of cellular function is an outstanding question. New results indicate that the formation of transcriptional hotspots is dictated by the formation of biomolecular condensates.
Research environment
Our group is part of the Theoretical Biocomplexity at the Niels Bohr Institute, were topics like phage-bacteria interactions, development and stem cells are also studied. We work closely with experimental groups at Harvard Medical School, Academia Sinica in Taipei and Universities in Peking and Shenzen. The candidate of the position will likely pay visits to these laboratories.
Job description
The postdoc is primarily expected to conduct research on mathematical and physical modelling of condensate formation and oscillations in cellular systems. This should be carried out in close contact with experimental laboratories from which data will be obtained. Apart from this, the postdoc’s duties include supervision of students, participation in teaching as well as other ad hoc duties like outreach.
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
The applicant should have a PhD degree (or expect to defend her/his PhD thesis in the next months), with a strong background in at least one of the areas of physics, biophysics, bioengineering, microbiology and a curious mind-set. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with one of the following subjects: biophysical modelling, oscillations, dynamical systems, complex physics, genetic control.
