Consultancy in Surgery Combined with a Clinical Professorship in Surgery with Special Focus on Cancer Surgery in Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer
A clinical position as a consultant surgeon in esophagogastric cancer surgery (ECV) at the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of surgery with special focus on cancer surgery in upper gastrointestinal cancer at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
With this new position, the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the department
The department is highly specialized. There are approximately 90 interventions for gastroesophageal junction cancer per year, as well as a further approx. 75 ECV surgical interventions, of which the majority is carried out robot-assisted. In addition, advanced endoscopy is carried out, approx. 3.500 diagnostic and advanced therapeutic procedures including EUS/EMR/ESD/cholangioscopy in the upper gastrointestinal tract and RFA in Barrett's esophagus, approx. 100-200 procedures per year.
The department uses robot-assisted surgery as part of the treatment of cancer in the esophagus, gastroesophageal junction, and stomach.
In addition, approximately 300 liver resections, 220 pancreas resections and around 60 liver transplantations are performed yearly as well as complication surgery in connection with iatrogenic bile duct lesions and 20-30 Klatskins operations. Finally, complications-, trauma- and lower GI surgery are performed in 200-250 patients. The department supports Rigshospitalets level-1 trauma center.
Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
We offer an exciting job where you will work on an equal footing with the department's permanent consultant surgeons and staff specialists and can contribute to the development of all aspects of upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery.
The main area of responsibility will naturally be within esophagogastric cancer, but the consultant in question must, together with the department's other specialists, contribute to the examination and treatment of patients who are otherwise referred to the department.
The applicant must be a specialist in surgery. When assessing the applicant, in addition to broad clinical experience, emphasis will be placed on research experience primarily within upper gastrointestinal cancer. In addition, applicants with experience in robotic surgery for upper gastrointestinal disorders and advanced endoscopy will be preferred. International certification from the UEMS in the field of esophagogastric cancer surgery will be considered an additional qualification.
Research and teaching
With the new position as consultant in esophagogastric cancer surgery and clinical professor of Surgery with a special focus on cancer surgery in upper gastrointestinal cancer the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.
The department has pre- and postgraduate training obligations for doctors and other staff groups and the applicant must therefore be willing to participate in the teaching.
Qualifications
Applicants must be a board-certified specialist in Surgery. International certification from the UEMS in the field of esophagogastric cancer surgery will be considered an additional qualification.
Conditions
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. The appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet.
Salary and conditions of employment as a consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and the University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks, and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full-time secretary position from the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Surgery & Transplantation at the Centre of Cancer and Organ Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet
