The unit has 117 beds spread over 7 bed sections, an endoscopy section, medical and surgical outpatient clinics and takes part in a central operation section.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department Endoscopic treatment has developed rapidly over the last decade as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical treatment for several gastrointestinal disorders. Many of these are treated specifically at Amager- Hvidovre Hospital as a tertiary care function, which is why advanced endoscopic techniques such as invasive procedures by endoscopic ultrasound have already been integrated. There are obvious advantages by usage of endoscopy over surgery, but the development requires close monitoring and interventional studies to optimize outcomes for the procedures. Examples of disease entities where this development has been implemented include acute necrotizing and chronic pancreatitis, and motility disorders in the upper gastrointestinal tract. For other disorders such as hereditary polyposis disorders, endoscopy contributes to disease monitoring and cancer prevention, and invasive endoscopic treatment leads to a reduction in surgery for these patients.

The purpose of the professorship is to ensure an evidence-based and safe transition from surgery to endoscopy and likewise to ensure an effective use of endoscopic techniques for the benefit of these patients.
